the self

Self Portrait III (900x900).jpg

self portraits

Much of my photography is inspired by the following lines from the objectivist poet George Oppen, "The self is no mystery, the mystery is / That there is something for us to stand on" (from the poem "World, World--"). In other words, the real mystery is grounded in the fact, in the wonder, that we even are, that we even exist at all. This series of self portraits is, in part, a reflection on such ontological questions.

This second series of self portraits continues my exploration of solitude, inspired in part by the writings of Emerson and Thoreau.
