“snow sounds” (c) Stephen Cairns

What exactly do we mean when we use the word theme in relation to art, be it written or visual? Are we referring to some central idea or concept?  If so, are the possible meanings that underlie that idea or concept inherently and inextricably bound to the creator, the creation, or the viewer (or, perhaps, a blend of all three)?  In the pages below, I have chosen a theme– be it a place, a time, an idea– and asked each photographer to share his or her thoughts on making images that are born from considerations of that theme.  And, you gentle reader, will be left to sort out your thoughts about these questions– and the implications of the artist’s  creations born from and through the theme’s possible meanings– for yourself.
